SSS Aberdeen and RGU Grand Prix report
Halloween weekend saw EURC kick off the SSS Rifle season in spectacular fashion at the Aberdeen and RGU Grand Prix competitions. With an influx of talented shooters this year as well as the core of last year’s team staying on, EURC had looked to build on last year’s success and the results would seem to bode well for the rest of the season.
The Team of VIII put in the highest score in SSS rifle in the past 5 years and then equalled it the next day to finish with two comprehensive victories. Not to be outdone, the A Team of IV and the Ladies’ Triad also won their matches on both days with the B Team of IV coming second on Saturday.
Shooting in her first university competition, fresher Bryony Fraser-Burn performed extraordinarily well, coming 2nd in A Class on Saturday – only missing out on first place by a single point.
Right behind her was Smallbore Captain, Chris Gray; who shot consistently well to secure 3rd place in A Class. Chris and Rory MacLeod also managed to clinch first place in the highly competitive pairs category on Saturday.
In B class, James Gutteridge, Lara Muttiah and Vicky Carter earned 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively. Despite having not shot before September, Holly Bunn scored a creditable 187 to place first in the Novice competition.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the next day was equally, if not more, successful. Nikki Sammels was unfortunate to be knocked back into 2nd in A class on Sunday after a fantastic shoot. James placed 2nd in B class again, followed by Vicky in 3rd place.
After such a successful beginning to the season, EURC look well placed to continue to build on the great work from last season and, as always, it is hugely encouraging to see so many of the more inexperienced members taking part in inter-university competition and gaining valuable competition experience.
